¶ 01 · The route

The route through Indonesia.

A Indonesia trip is not one city, and we will not pretend otherwise. This is the spine we are building it on, one base at a time. Open means planned street by street, not scraped from a listicle.

BaliOpen file

The base file. Ubud, the east coast, the quiet north, planned in full.

The quieter crossing. Three small islands, no cars.

¶ 02 · The base file

Bali. The open file.

Every Indonesia plan we build today starts here. Bali is filed in full: neighbourhoods, food, safety, and people on the ground.

The island that taught the world what a destination Instagram account should look like still has rice paddies where farmers plant by the lunar calendar and temple festivals that happen whether tourists show up or not.

Bali operates on two levels. There's the everyday Balinese rhythm of temple ceremonies, rice-terrace farming and family warungs serving nasi campur for pocket change. Then there's the international scene of beach clubs, yoga retreats and clifftop villas that can cost more per night than most Balinese earn in months. Smart travelers learn to move between both worlds.

· Where to stay

Pick where to sleep first. Everything else follows.

Bali is several cities pretending to be one. The neighbourhood you pick decides whether your trip feels like a layover or a slow read.

/ 01UbudThe cultural and spiritual heart of Bali, set inland among rice terraces and river gorges around 35 km north of Denpasar. The town centre clusters around the Ubud Royal Palace and the Ubud Market on Jalan Raya Ubud, with the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary marking the southern edge. Surrounding villages like Penestanan, Sayan, Tegallalang, Mas, and Pengosekan are known respectively for painters, river-valley villa resorts, rice-terrace views, mask carvers, and ceramic studios.Yoga and wellness seekers, art and craft buyers, slower-paced travellers, families with older children, dance and gamelan performance audiences
/ 02Seminyak / PetitengetThe established upmarket beach strip on Bali's south-west coast, north of Kuta and south of Canggu. Defined by Jalan Kayu Aya ('Eat Street'), the beach clubs at Petitenget (Potato Head, Ku De Ta, La Plancha), boutique shopping along Jalan Kayu Cendana, and a long flat beach with consistent surf. Heavier on resorts, designer-style villas, and international restaurants than on Balinese culture.First-time visitors who want an easy mix of beach, bars and shopping; couples; honeymooners; travellers who want a polished holiday over an immersive one
/ 03CangguA former rice-paddy farming area that became Bali's surf-and-co-working capital over the 2015-2024 period. Stretches roughly from Berawa in the south to Pererenan in the north, with surf breaks at Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and Pererenan. The streets are clogged with cafés, smoothie-bowl spots, scooter rentals, gyms and tattoo studios catering to a long-stay digital-nomad crowd.Surfers, digital nomads, long-stay visitors, fitness and wellness travellers, café culture
· The shortlist

Eat. Move. Do.

The whole point of solo travel: depth, not breadth. The rest, the plan builds around you.

¶ EAT

Food worth showing up for.

Balinese grilled seafood

Jimbaran Bay Seafood Warungs

Row of grilled-seafood warungs with plastic tables on the sand at sunset. Fresh fish, prawns and lobsters grilled over coconut-husk fires with sambal matah, waves at your feet as planes land behind you.

Muaya Beach and Kedonganan Beach, Jimbaran
¶ MOVE

Getting around, honestly.

Transport notes for Bali are still being filed.

¶ DO

Three experiences worth your time.

Adventure

Mount Batur Sunrise Hike

A pre-dawn climb up an active 1,717-metre volcano in the centre-east of Bali, starting around 04:00 from the village of Toya Bungkah at the lakeshore. The summit ridge gives a panoramic sunrise over Lake Batur, Mount Abang, Mount Agung to the east, and on clear mornings, Lombok's Mount Rinjani in the distance.

Nature

Tegalalang Rice Terraces

The most photographed rice terraces in Bali, about 20 minutes north of central Ubud, carved into a steep river valley using the Balinese subak irrigation system. The terraces themselves are still working agricultural land, with tourist infrastructure including viewing areas and walking paths through the paddies.

· Solo travel safety

Bali is safe. With one or two things you should know.

Almost all of the risk here is about scams, not violence. Staying alert is more valuable than staying scared.

Scam alerts for Bali are still being filed.

¶ 03 · What open means

Open means filed, not listed.

Indonesia is open from Bali. That means real neighbourhoods, real food picks, verified safety notes, and an insider on call. It does not mean we pretend to cover the whole country.

Java and Lombok and the Gilis are being scouted now. When a base is filed properly it joins the route, and your plans can build on it. Until then, we would rather be honest than broad.
